Testing The Times

I’m going Plain Jane today in my article. No visual tricks to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Just plain talk. What do you think?

For those of you that follow me here, you know how diverse I am with my written topics. It is by sheer coincidence that the work I write is common among a lot of other writers. My voice is pretty much the same as everyone else’s. I need to try and figure out how to separate myself from others though.

When I started on Medium back in 2019, I had no idea what I would write about. I brainstormed, but a lot of my ideas just didn’t jump out at me. I did try a few things, though. Granted, some of my work hasn’t been all that swell with an audience, but at least I put myself out there. I’m testing the waters so to speak to see what works and what doesn’t. I see that my article on Madcap Mayhem In The City Streets Of London, England has the most views, in contrast to my article on My Own Political Assessment: Is Socialism Bad? that has the highest read ratio. People seem to like my political awareness.

But something more dear to me is my 3-part article on drum hardware that hardly got any views. Well… compared to these other two articles mentioned above, the 3-part article series didn’t get quite the applause as those mentioned above anyway. I suppose that all is subjective, and to be fair, I was just messing around with Medium at the time and needed to write about something that I know about.

Writers need to write regularly though. Myself, even though I consider myself more of a creative person than a writer per se, I tend to be vocal about things and have a persistent nagging within myself to get it out.

So this is what I’m trying to get at. Put yourself out there. People will take notice, as long as you do whatever it is you do from the heart. The understanding I got when I started college and getting my undergrad in journalism is that once I wrote more and often, that if you don’t find a voice, your voice finds you and whatever it is that you write about becomes who you are. Read that again. It isn’t rocket science. You are what you do. You are what you put yourself out there as.

Testing the times is just a way for us to take a look at ourselves and really focus on what it is that we want to say, or do, for people to see us as. It’s not fake if it comes from the heart. Have I wrote about this before? Maybe.
