Unbridled Passions

Whatever your interest is, pursue it with a fervorous voracity that only brings the kind of joy that you used to get when you were a child at Christmas time.

Take a second and go over that statement a few times. Who doesn’t remember what it felt like at Christmas time as a child? You were profoundly excited, happy, even precociously wide-eyed at every sight and sound. You were, to coin another phrase, “like a kid in a candy store”.

What gets you excited today? Is it the smell of apple pie? The next Jackie Chan movie? How about driving your brand new Lambo at 110 miles an hour down Interstate 95? Well, for me, it’s the exhilaration of being able to express myself in a way that moves people in some way, whether emotionally, or whatever.

I’m talking about being a creative actor and musician. Granted, I’m not a very good guitar player, but as a percussionist… I am SLAM BANG! See what I did there? After I have set up my drums, I will slowly slink into my drum throne to take a seat behind them, and just examine them. I love to look at how shiny my cymbals are. The shimmer of light, the solid feel of wood, mylar, and metal. Oh the stainless steel look of my drum hardware! It gives me goosebumps every time I sit behind them. They have no idea how much pain they will endure because my excitement is so intense when I’m playing to music. It’s exciting just to think about the whole thing!

I also love to act. I am passionate about being able to perform a scene with my scene partners to bring about an amazing show. You see, when you’re an actor, you embody the character. You become. You are. To my knowledge, most actors train for years to make acting effortless, and for those that are just naturally gifted, well it just is. You know? Myself, I am the type of actor that it takes a tiny bit longer for me to allow myself to become. But the process is the best part. Once you have found your character, it only goes up from there. Method acting allows you to internalize without too much effort. Emulation and your own life experience can help shape your character, much of what method acting is really all about. Train. Learn. Be.

You put the two together, musical performance and stage acting, you cannot go wrong. It’s the existential feeling of oneself being the center of attention, or the whole “look at me, I’m creative!” aspect. It’s an unbridled passion that sparks so much hat you can’t help but be overwhelmed. That is, of course, if you’re not into that sort of thing. I am, so why not? Maybe in another article I will write about my method. But then again, such things can be individually personal. It’s an idea that I have pitched to myself anyway. I always do that, and sometimes I forget what it was that I was going to do. So maybe I’ll forget, who knows?

In college when I was studying journalism, we were given writing assignments each week with a max total of 1200 words where we needed to write about things that interested us. To be explorative in our approach to the writing, and to try and be as descriptive as possible within the 1200 word limit. Not easy to do sometimes. Since I haven’t written an article in a while, I though that I’d try and rekindle some of that magic from years gone past. To see if I still “got it.” What do you think? Your comments are requested.
